The Rhythm of Life Drumming Course

Why this course?

The Beginner’s Guide to Rhythm is great for the novice hand drummer. It presents simple drum techniques, including how to sit and hold the drum, basic strokes and rhythm exercises drawn from a range of playing styles.

You don’t have to read a music score to use this course!... rhythms are written in a user-friendly manner.

the 3-Beat graph

A typical graph for drumming a basic beat.

The drumming exercises build towards more and more complex rhythms that you can practise over and over again while listening to the supplied audios that help guide your drumming - keeping it time and up to speed.

Grant's simple teaching style makes everything EASY. You just have to play along and have fun. There is no pass or fail or standard to reach, but you can certainly reach an amazing standard of drumming if you follow Grant's instruction and practice regularly.

Hidden benefits of hand drumming

The HIDDEN BENEFIT is that practising drumming can improve your Right brain- Left brain dialogue so that you will develop creativity or analytical thinking skills you never knew were possible. It all stems from learning to use both hands equally well.

Every style of drumming has an associated grid like the one above, as well as an audio and video file to illustrate each rhythm. You can drum along to the videos and the audios. Grant is also available by email or through the forum to answer questions and get you over any challenges.

The course has eleven lessons which should take you at least that many weeks, but you are able to access the course for up to 26 weeks. That means you can keep going back over old rhythms until they become second nature.

How Grant got into drumming

In 1987, Grant came to beautiful Golden Bay and discovered the joy of drumming.

He enjoys playing both original and traditional rhythms and has studied the ancient rhythms of Haiti and Africa. Grant has performed live with Jambalaya, Rhythm House and Jah Jah and currently performs with the ethno European band, Ederlezi and percussion band Grio which he co-founded in 2000.

In 1996, Grant’s love of drumming led him to make his first drum. It was a natural progression and, since then, he has made over six hundred drums for people from around the world.

Grant’s drumming skills have been enhanced by his intimate knowledge of the drum itself and his passion and enthusiasm for drumming has influenced many of those who play Tribull Drums.
